Before the Bell depicts one of only three brick one-room schoolhouses left in lowa, McGee Brick School in Delaware County. McGee Brick School was the first teaching assignment of the nationally recognized rural educator, Sarah Gillespie Huftalen. Huftalen, who taught at McGee Brick School from 1883-1884, was responsible for the creation of the Rural Department of the lowa State Teachers’ Association in 1910, a concept that became the national standard for rural education. Efforts to restore and preserve the school are underway.
