The B&O Roundhouse in Martinsburg, West Virginia, was built in 1866 to replace two roundhouses which were burned by Confederate General Stonewall Jackson in 1861. The roundhouses were used as maintenance houses for steam locomotives. Historian Michael Caplinger suggests that the B&O Roundhouse is the oldest engine house still standing in the country, and it was also the site of the nation’s first organized railway strike in 1877. Currently, efforts are being made for the building to receive National Historic Landmark status.
